I'm sitting on the love seat the hubby made, the only dry thing on our back porch. I am looking at my abandoned and drenched yard, thinking 'you get lemons, you make lemonade'......right? So if I can't get out in the garden I shall read about gardening and share some of my favourite books on my blog.
So if you don't already have these, and are interested and/ or thinking about living a cleaner, healthier and a more sustainable life then I recommend you check these out!
My husband bought me the "earth users guide to permaculture" (second edition) by Rosemary Morrow for my birthday in January, and it is a great read! I just had to share! Fabulous for designing and analysing your space and how best to use it. Emphasis on how systems work together! Love it!
"Wild Fermentation" by Sandor Ellix Katz is a wonderfully written book, and a fabulous adventure into living foods! This book has everything from cultured dairy foods, to wines, ciders, meads, and vinegar! Not to mention fermented vegetables, legumes and grains! Fantastic stuff. I love watching my food come alive!
"Grass Roots" is a wonderful magazine, and I love that it is all Australian! It has many wonderful articles, DIY guides, recipes, and tips on just about everything self sufficiency! Give it a look!
"Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon. What can I say? This is where it all began for me. Be warned, if you are new to all this stuff, this book will shake you to your core. Parts of it did for me, everything I grew up believing about food was crap, and the people that produced my food, and the "professionals" that endorse the "food" etc etc. Anyway, aside all the well written info in this book, it has so many wonderful recipes from all over the world. Good, clean old fashioned food. Just like nan used to make, only better (sorry nan).
The final book in my awkwardly photographed display below is a cheese making book. "Home Cheesemaking" 2nd ed. by Neil and Carole Willman. A lot of emphasis on pasteurising, so if you want raw, adjust the recipe accordingly. But it is good for the step by step instructions, and great for beginners! Have a go! It's an amazing feeling to make your own cheese! Mmm cheese!
There are also many websites I use for info and reading material. I also source many supplies etc online, and will create a separate post for these soon.
Happy reading lovely people, and feel free to recommend me your favourite reads too!
