Ok let's talk garbage! Literal rubbish! Hahaha
Seriously though, as I put out the garbage last week I realise how light the bin was, we had ONE bag of garbage in there. Granted it was a large style kitchen bin bag. But it was only one nonetheless, from a household of 8 people. Not bad. The recycling on the other hand was overflowing as usual. To which I have decided to do something about. I mean recycling is good, but I want to recycle it at home and use things until they really do need to be thrown away.
My plan is to collect some beer bottles for my home brewing adventures soon to come. I'll save the news paper for mulch, I find it great with keeping the weeds down around new seedlings etc. I am reusing and even composting some of the cardboard and must get a no junk mail sign! Not that we get a lot of catalogues etc, but it will help. The major one for us is milk bottles. We use a 3 litre bottle of milk everyday. That really adds up to a full bin over a fortnight, imagine a years worth!
I came across a great idea for reusing these milk cartons and am experimenting with my designs. I have created reusable tubs, the girls are keeping their hair ties etc in them, and I am using them for various crafty bits. The hubster will use the next lot for all his bolts, screws and tiling crosses etc. After the money I have spent on Tupperware and reusable tubs, and being a little 'precious' about them, I wonder why I didn't do this sooner!
The picture below has three 'first draft' designs, and not pictured is a scoop I made for the kids sandpit. As you can see there is a lot less waste going into the recycling bin next time! Maybe you could try recycling the recycling too!
